if you were going to get some land and put a house on it, what better than to put one of these? i've looked at different types of modular houses and usually they're very expensive. and, yes, usually more expansive than these tiny homes, but gees, character-on-arrival!
i think i'll take three!

those were the days...

the husband said, "i was watching some old commercials on a video i got at the library, and they had a commerical with ozzie and harriet advertising a gas air conditioner." "gas," i said, "how the hell did they fill it up?" "it was natural gas," he said. "oh," i said.

look ma, no hands ....

it's interesting the things people used to do and not think anything of it. i just watched this video of a woman replacing a tire on an airplane back in the 1920s, maybe, and she didn't have on a parachute. oh, i forgot to say the plane was IN THE AIR.

as i watched her my stomach heaved and my palms got sweaty and even though i knew how it would turn out, it was difficult to keep watching. i'm not good with heights and could never in a million years have done what she did. and i usually figure i can do about anything. but not this -- not way up there.

the ONLY thing which could have induced me to do something like that would have been if one of my kids had been in danger. that's a mom for you.

oh, the memories...

remember fireflies? i haven't seen fireflies in decades. i don't know if it's living in a certain part of the country, or not spending much time outside in the dark, or what.

so i am interested in this company called humble earth. they make fireflies. once we get our yard (or garden) landscaped, i might invest in some of these little things.

our landscaper calls her projects 'gardens'. i like her and i think she has wonderful ideas and lots of knowledge. but a really complete garden takes a lot of money. our budget is pretty small, so we have kind of a skeletal thing starting to happen, but i'm going to see what i can do to fill things out a bit.

regardless, once the garden is put in place, we may be spending a lot more time outside, hence the fireflies. we'll see.

oldies but goodies

a friend sent an e-mail the other day. one of those 'do this and pass it on' kind of things. but it was a good one for the way-back machine, so i decided to include some of it here.

the following is a list of some shows which were on in the 50s and 60s, and most of them were ones i liked.

remember those tubes, well, no -- i suppose most of you are waaaaaay too young to have ever seen those pneumatic tubes in action, but they used to have them in banks and department stores and government offices.

they were so cool! you'd put something inside and zip!!! off they went to be quickly deposited on someone's desk. and there have been a number of times in the last x-months when i and my colleagues have mentioned we wish we still had a system like that at work.

well! look at this! there are people out there who know the value of this system! it just makes an old heart glad *tear on cheek*. yay, retro!

do this, don't do that, let them do what they want

i think my unhappiness with things nowadays has a direct and very strong tie with my age. i've seen strictness in america (police in the 50's), i've seen dissent (abby hoffman, the weather underground, the black panthers), i've lived the cold war (gary powers, community and basement bomb shelters), seen two presidents shot (kennedy and reagan), seen deadly spy efforts (georgi markov), and seen rules and regulations you wouldn't believe (girls can't wear pants to school, if you missed a deadline there were no second chances, complete statistics about people who lived in a town were available in city directories -- their jobs, salaries, family members and ages, address, phone number, and more).

i don't miss that stuff, but i do have a problem with namby-pamby laws which let criminals off easy, parents who let their kids run amok in stores and restaurants, people who are rude, and the whole litany of political correctness since it's usually waaaaaaaay overdone.

can't we strike a pleasant and reasonable balance?

remember how guys used to soup up their cars and add dumps and a 4-on-the-floor and button-and-tuck and stuff like that?

they had nothing on these guys!

in fact, now that i think of it, they're probably the same guys! hahaha...

dry hands

washington state has started a new thing by outlawing dishwashing soap, which contain phosphates, from being sold here. it is supposed to happen over a period of months, starting on the eastern side of the state, but the husband noticed it awhile ago and when he asked the store people about it, they said they had no idea why the regular soap wasn't on the shelves. at any rate, the move to ban the popular type of soap is spreading to the northeastern side of the country and legislation may eventually happen which would make it national. the other soaps don't really do that good a job on dishes. we may have to go back to washing them ourselves. ugh.

finally!

okay, here it comes. all my life i've thought how cool it would be to have a small helicopter or jet-pack or something tiny which a person could get on, strap on, step into which would be extremely versatile and maneuverable and get them someplace quickly.

it looks like we may actually be starting to focus in on that type of technology. read this and be excited.

the only drawback i can see at this point is that some yo-yo is going to get himself killed in one of these because he was too arrogant to actually study the art and physics of flying, and then there's going to be a law-suit.

tsk, tsk. we're just cleaning up the gene pool.

complications upon complicated

oh, to be young again. i'd study computers, code, gaming, and hacking like crazy. strictly as a matter of self-defense, you understand. usually, the more you know about something, the more you can counter it.

i read an article a couple of weeks ago warning people about facebook and to be careful about putting too much self-info out there. now comes the story about the 18-yr old who hacked into twitter.

for us oldsters, it's pretty easy to be conscious about telling too much about ourselves -- we grew up with a strong sense of privacy and confidentiality. today's users (mostly younger than i) don't necessarily have that same sense of watching out and being careful.

i suppose part of it was the cold war and the potential threat of danger, although youth in any age declares invincibility and fearlessness. regardless, thinking about ramifications before laying yourself out there might not be bad advice.
